How to Make a Velvet Texture for Your Cakes with Wafer Paper Scraps

Want to give your cakes a soft, luxurious velvet look and feel while maximizing your Wafer Paper scraps at the same time? In this tutorial, Denise (@denises_delights_) demonstrates a popular method that is simple, edible, and waste-free. Whether you have leftover scraps from projects you did with our Standard 0.30 mm, Standard Plus 0.40 mm, or Premium 0.60 mm sheets, you can turn them into a stunning cake finish in just a few steps! ALWAYS. SAVE. YOUR. SCRAPS.

What You’ll Need

  • paper2eat Wafer Paper scraps (any thickness)

  • Blender or food processor

  • Sifter (optional)

  • Chilled, frosted cake (buttercream for this tutorial)

  • Small food-safe paint brush

Making the Velvet Texture

1. Collect Your Scraps

Grab any leftover Wafer Paper pieces from previous projects. The thickness does not matter as they all work for this technique.

2. Blend or Process

Place the scraps into your blender or food processor. Pulse until you reach your desired texture. Each machine will give slightly different results.

3. Optional Sift for Extra Softness

For a super-fine velvet finish, sift your processed Wafer Paper before applying it. This removes larger pieces for a more uniform look.

4. Prep Your Cake

Frost your cake as usual and let it chill in the fridge until the icing is firm to the touch.

5. Apply the Velvet

Sprinkle the processed Wafer Paper over the cake’s surface. Use a small food-safe paint brush to gently press it onto the sides, buff it in, and dust off any excess just like you would with sprinkles.

Your cake now has a gorgeous, 100% edible velvet finish that is classy and eye-catching!
