FAQ

Frosting Sheets (sometimes also called icing sheets) are the most used edible papers worldwide when it comes to cake printing and cake decorating. Cake decorators love to work with these edible sheets as they are very easy to use and the print resolution is very close to regular paper. Our Frosting Sheets bond with the frosting / icing on your cake once you apply them so they give your cake a very clean finish.

However, not all frosting sheets / icing sheets available today work very well with all edible printers. The consistency is very important, not only for the taste but also in order to work well in your edible ink printer. Otherwise the edible sheet can get stuck in the printer and cause a paper jam. Our Frosting Sheets have the highest quality you can buy today and the perfect consistency to work great in your edible ink printer without any hassle, even in front loading printers.

They have specifically been designed to be used in edible printers and come in different sizes such as 8.5" x 11" letter size, 11.75" x 16.50" A3 size as well as pre-cut shapes.

They come with an easy to peel off acetate backing sheet which ensures that the Frosting Sheet gets pulled into the printer properly just like regular office paper does. It also prevents the paper from sticking to the printer’s rollers as well as sticking to the other edible sheets in the pack. Certainly, they can also be used without an edible ink printer. Cutting out shapes and applying them to a cake is another great way to use frosting sheets. It is an easy way to give your cake a special look.

Our Frosting Sheets have a slight vanilla taste and therefore do not impact the cake’s taste too much. It is a convenient, affordable and time-saving way to create personalized and unique creations for any occasion in minutes. If you need them only once in a while just store them in room temperature in a dry place in the resealable bag in which they come in. The resealable bag is opaque and preserves the freshness of your sheets to ensure great results for your next prints at a later time.

Our paper2eat Wafer Paper is probably the most natural edible paper available today and certainly all ingredients are FDA approved. The ingredients list (primarily composed of water, potato starch and oil) is probably the shortest you will ever see for an edible paper. It is a very versatile product. Unlike many other edible papers, not only can the wafer paper sheets be used to customize cakes but they can also be used to create edible menus, edible placeholders and many other beautiful edible things. This is possible due to its consistency.

It is a very dry and solid edible paper that does not need a plastic backing to peel it off from. It is slightly transparent and has an drier texture. Photos printed on this edible paper appear to be marbled. The print resolution is not as high and sharp as on the Frosting Sheets since it's made with different and primarily starch-based ingredients; so it's ideal for printing letters, texts and photos that don’t need a very high print resolution.

At paper2eat we carry three thicknesses for our Wafer Paper:

  1. Standard 0.30 mm - Our thinnest Wafer Paper. Very malleable. Ideal for delicate & intricate decorations.
  2. Standard Plus 0.40 mm - Solid middle ground. A good balance between Standard and Premium. Good starting point for people new to paper2eat Wafer Paper.
  3. Premium 0.60 mm - Our thickest Wafer Paper. More durable. Ideal for edible printing & creating larger more substantial decorations that need rigidity.

We have all the same paper thicknesses available both in plain and vanilla flavors. Plain basically tastes like nothing, and vanilla has a very subtle vanilla taste. You can read more about the differences between our Wafer Paper thicknesses here.

Our Miracle Transfer Sheets were designed to allow you to be able to work with isomalt, white chocolate and meringue for your creations. You can make memorable lollipops, pralines, chocolate candy bars, and MANY other uniquely decorated custom creations.

Just insert a paper2eat Miracle Transfer Sheet into your edible ink printer, mirror your desired graphic or text and print it on the sheet. (FYI: Mirroring the image means flipping it horizontally on itself before you print.) Once printed, dispense the desired amount of chocolate molding over the sheet.

Then spread it evenly with a spatula and let it harden. Remove the backing, and DONE. This is how you transfer your edible print to chocolate, and your photo or text now certainly appears the right way.

The most popular edible paper we carry for food printing is our Frosting Sheets (also known as icing sheets). Then we have our Wafer Paper and our Miracle Transfer Sheets. Each of these types of papers differ from the others. Click on each edible paper type to read their respective product descriptions.

Please note that the ingredients as well as attributes and characteristics stated in our product descriptions are referring strictly to products from our brand, paper2eat. Different brands may use different ingredients and have different attributes and characteristics. All of our edible papers as well as all of our edible ink cartridges and edible ink refill bottles are 100% FDA compliant.

Edible ink basically is food grade ink / food coloring which has specifically been designed to be used in inkjet printers for food printing. Instead of regular ink the inkjet printer uses cartridges which are filled with edible ink. This allows you to print digital images onto edible papers. Our edible ink is safe for food printing. It complies with all FDA (food and drug administration) regulations and is manufactured in the USA.

However, edible ink is for cake decorating purposes / food printing use only and should not be swallowed / drunk as such. Our paper2eat edible ink is made of water, glycerin, preservatives, FDA-approved colorants and is engineered to flow very well through common Canon and Epson inkjet printers such as those sold in regular office supply stores.

Our manufacturer uses machinery that does not come in contact with any food allergens. The entire manufacturing process is in accordance with FDA regulations.

Edible inkjet printing basically works just like normal office inkjet printing. The only difference is that you have edible ink cartridges installed in your edible inkjet printer instead of regular ink cartridges, and instead of regular office paper you insert edible paper into your printer’s paper feed.

Now you can print images, texts, etc. onto this edible paper which you can apply to cakes, pies, cookies, muffins, etc. afterwards. The entire image (the edible paper and the edible ink) is edible. PLEASE NOTE YOU SHOULD NEVER USE A PRINTER FOR FOOD PRINTING THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY USED WITH REGULAR INK CARTRIDGES / REGULAR INK AS CONTAMINATION MAY OCCUR! FOR FOOD PRINTING YOU SHOULD USE A PRINTER THAT RUNS WITH EDIBLE INK FROM THE VERY START AND NEVER USE REGULAR INK IN THIS PRINTER!

The best printers for edible ink printing, based on our experience, are Canon and Epson printers. We currently carry Canon printers and offer bundles which include edible papers and edible ink cartridges to make it easy for bakeries and home-based businesses to start with edible ink printing as our printer bundle includes everything you need to start with edible ink printing.

So far we've experienced that both Canon and Epson, work very well for edible ink printing purposes, but the Canon printers are better if you want to print onto Miracle Transfer Sheets as the rolls of the Canon printers grab the Miracle Transfer Sheets better than the rolls of the Epson printers. Canon printers often also have more ink tanks. Some models use 5 ink tanks (2 x black, 1 x yellow, 1 x cyan and 1 x magenta), some use 6 ink tanks (same as mentioned before plus 1 x grey).

We offer edible ink cartridges for many Canon models and also add new cartridge types from time to time for the new printer models. However, we only carry and add cartridges for those printer models which we believe are good for edible ink printing as some models may not be as good as others. So if you plan on buying a new printer for edible ink printing purposes somewhere else, please make sure edible ink cartridges are available for this printer model. If you buy a printer bundle from us, you can be sure to have a good printer for which you can purchase edible ink cartridges from us.

We don’t provide pre-printed images, but we provide materials such as edible papers, edible inks, and edible ink printer bundles to allow decorators to print whatever they want. 😊

For the most up-to-date answer to this question, please see Find my Inks. Note: If you don't find cartridges compatible with your printer model, we do offer edible ink refill bottles.

You should only use a brand new inkjet printer for food printing. NEVER USE REGULAR INK cartridges with this printer nor regular ink as contamination may occur. Maintain your printer properly and regularly (see the "How do I maintain my edible ink printer properly?” section below).

Bad printing results can be either the result of no or rare maintenance of your edible ink printer (please see next section “How do I maintain my edible ink printer properly?”) or simply of improper printing settings.

If you believe you maintained your printer properly it is recommended to take a closer look at the printing settings. Change the paper type in your printing settings from regular to “matte photo paper” and the print quality from “regular” to “high”. If this does not work set the color intensity in your printing settings to dark. We recommend to perform the test prints on regular office paper to not waste your edible paper.

You can find all of the tips you need to maintain your edible ink printer in our detailed 6 Tips to Maintain Your Edible Ink Printer (Canon) blog post.

Yes, all of our edible ink cartridges are refillable. In contrast to regular ink cartridges and edible ink cartridges from some other manufacturers on the market which use one-time chips, paper2eat edible ink cartridges come with auto-reset chips. An auto-reset chip resets automatically once you remove the empty cartridge from the printer. This allows you to refill the edible ink cartridge and the printer will recognize it as full again once you re-install it.

In order to maintain great printing results we recommend to refill edible ink cartridges up to three times only as the wick (outlet port) of the cartridge can wear out over time.

IMPORTANT: Regarding refills, the 280/281 series cartridges work slightly differently from the other cartridges.

280/281 series cartridges are only available as non-indicating refillable cartridges. When you first install this cartridge, it may or may not light up. With some printer models you may hear a beep when installed. You will still be able to print even though the indicator light may not be on. Once you refill the cartridge and install it back into the printer the indicator light on the cartridge may not light up. The cartridge will still continue to work. Once you install the cartridge a message may appear saying that you installed a cartridge that is not a genuine Canon cartridge. This is due to the fact that edible ink uses its own compatible cartridges which sometimes vary more or less to the genuine Canon cartridges depending on the printer model / cartridge series.

In this case, the printer may recognize that the installed cartridge is not a genuine Canon cartridge. You will then be asked to acknowledge the use of this non-genuine Canon cartridge and that you understand and agree Canon will not be liable for any malfunction that has been caused by the use of a non-genuine Canon cartridge. Additionally, you may see a message requiring you to disable the function for detecting the ink level in your cartridge. The 280/281 series not being able to read the ink levels after being refilled is not up to us; it has more to do with the newer printer models. Therefore it is necessary that you inspect the ink levels manually as you will not be able to see the ink levels on the printer or your computer.

  1. Remove the sealing plug which covers the refill port on top of the cartridge.
  2. Now fill the edible ink cartridge with paper2eat edible ink through the refill port of the cartridge using a clean syringe. Leave a minimum space of 20% in the cartridge empty to avoid leaking. Then put the sealing plug back onto the refill port again.
ATTENTION: IT IS RECOMMENDED TO USE DISPOSABLE GLOVES! YOU SHOULD ALSO COVER UP THE BOTTOM OF THE CARTRIDGE DURING THE REFILL PROCESS! EITHER PUT A PLASTIC COVER ON IT THAT USUALLY COMES WITH THE CARTRIDGES OR IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY JUST PUT A SMALL PIECE OF TAPE OR SOMETHING ELSE OVER IT! IT IS JUST IMPORTANT THAT THE OUTPUT OF THE CARTRIDGE IS CLOSED PROPERLY WHEN YOU REFILL THE CARTRIDGE TO PREVENT THE INK FROM RUNNING OUT DURING THE REFILL PROCESS!
  3. Install the refilled edible ink cartridge into your printer. paper2eat edible ink cartridges can be refilled unlimited times. However, in order to maintain a high print quality we recommend to refill no more than three times (maximum) as the wick (outlet port) of the cartridge can wear out.

All of our edible papers, edible ink cartridges and edible ink refill bottles, are 100% compliant with all FDA regulations.
