🍋🥝 Fruit cakes are EVERYTHING you didn't even know you needed in your life! And after seeing the reaction to our recent fruit cake collaborations with Marilin (@cake.coutureco), we totally understand why. People absolutely loved seeing these cakes, and the response was HUGE.
But there’s something especially fun about these cakes: they don’t just use fruit as decoration, they make the fruit itself the star of the cake. We’re talking bright, juicy-looking lemon slices and super green kiwi interiors, recreated as edible prints and placed right on top of beautifully decorated vintage-style cakes.
Step 1: Choose Your Fruit & Prepare Your Design 🍋🥝
Pick your fruit! The key is choosing a fruit with a distinctive interior that will instantly look like the real thing once printed. A detailed cross-section gives you all those little seeds, segments, and natural textures that make the finished cake so captivating.
Once you’ve chosen your fruit, find or create a high-quality image of its interior. You can photograph a real fruit yourself, find an appropriate image, or create your own digital design.
Size your image to fit the top of your cake, and don’t be afraid to make it BIG! The oversized fruit slice is what gives these cakes their unexpected, almost surreal look.
Step 2: Print and Apply Your Fruit Print 🍋🥝
Now it’s time to bring your fruit to life. Print your design onto a paper2eat Frosting Sheet using edible ink. This is where the magic happens! The detailed texture of the fruit, every little lemon segment or tiny kiwi seed, translates beautifully onto the edible sheet.
Smooth out the top of the frosting on your cake to creating a clean surface for your fruit print. Then carefully cut around your printed fruit and place the Frosting Sheet directly onto the top of your cake.
And just like that, your cake has a giant edible slice of fruit sitting right in the center!
Step 3: Go CRAZY With the Piping
Now it’s time to lean into vintage details. Pipe ruffles, shells, swirls, and other vintage-inspired details around the fruit image. Match your buttercream border colors to your fruit, think sunny yellows for lemon and vibrant greens for kiwi.
And if you really want to take it there, add little ribbons and edible pearls throughout the design. The combination of the delicate vintage piping, bows, pearls, and hyper-realistic fruit print is what makes these cakes so unexpectedly adorable.
Step 4: Add the Finishing Touches
Take a look around your cake and fill in any empty spaces with extra piping, pearls, bows, or fruit props. You can even add a small fruit prop to the side of the cake for an extra pop.
The goal is to have that perfect balance between old-school vintage cake decorating and an almost-too-real fruit center.
And There You Have It! ✨
Who knew a slice of lemon or kiwi could make such a statement on a cake? We absolutely loved seeing the reaction to these fruit cakes, and judging by all the love they’ve received, we’re definitely not the only ones obsessed with these!
Whether you go for a bright lemon, a fresh kiwi, or dream up your own fruit-inspired creation, a paper2eat Frosting Sheet makes it easy to turn the most intricate fruit details into an edible part of your design.
So...what fruit are you choosing for your next cake? 👀
