How To Make This Angel Cake - Who Knew Wafer Paper Was This Angelic?!
September 15, 2026
Anyone and everyone who's laid eyes on it is absolutely in love with this stunning angel cake from Nina (@_tasteofbrownsugar_)! From the feather details to the vintage piping style and tiny chocolate cherub details, every part of this cake was clearly a labor of love.
This one is a bit advanced and definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you’ve ever wanted your cakes to get a little more grandiose, and dare we say heavenly, here’s how Nina brought this beautiful design to life with the angel wings!
For a design this detailed, a little preparation goes a long way! When you’re working with so many individual pieces, having a consistent shape to follow makes the assembly process much easier.
Nina created templates for the overall wing shape as well as two different sizes of feathers. This helped her keep the wings and individual feathers even, cohesive, and symmetrical throughout the entire design.
To make your own templates, start by sketching or printing an angel wing shape in the size you want your finished wings to be. Cut it out and use it as your guide for the larger wing shape. For the feathers, you can draw these by hand on a piece of paper or cardstock, cut them out, and use them as reusable templates when cutting your wafer paper.
Tip: If you want both wings to look as even and symmetrical as possible, make one wing template and simply flip it over to create the opposite wing.
Step 1: Make the Wafer Paper Feathers
Once the templates were ready, it was time to make the feathers!
Each feather was cut individually using a craft knife and then given some dimension by using a balling tool. Nina then added small cuts to create more detail and texture.
This part takes some patience, but the finished effect is worth it!
Step 2: Assemble the Wings
Now for the real labor of love! Nina hand-placed every single feather onto the larger wafer paper wing, building up the layers one feather at a time.
To attach each feather, she usedjust a tiny amount of water on the back. Wafer paper is delicate, so you don't want to overdo it. Too much water can cause it to start dissolving.
A very small amount is all you need to make the back of the feather slightly sticky so it can adhere to the wing.
Step 3: Decorate the Cake
With the wings prepared, it was time for the cake itself!
Nina went with gorgeous vintage-style piping and added tiny chocolate cherubs for an extra special detail.
How did she make the cherubs? Simple, by using a cherub mold she has, filling it with melted white chocolate, then allowing the pieces to set completely before placing them onto the cake.
The combination of the ornate piping, chocolate accents, and delicate wings gives this cake such a beautiful vintage-inspired look.
Step 4: Attach the Wings
When creating the wing, Nina intentionally left a small section without feathers. This gave her a little bald spot where she could then gently push the wing into the cake while being careful not to disturb all those delicate feathers.
How do you attach the wing to the cake so it stays in place? You can use floral wire to hook to the wings while leaving a bit of a longer portion that you'll be pushing into the cake to lock the wings in place.
Step 5: Add the Finishing Touches
Finally, it was time to add her favorite luster dust. A touch of shimmer brought the entire design together and gave the delicate wings that extra magical finish ✨
And there you have it! A stunning angel cake with delicate, handcrafted wafer paper wings. We absolutely love how Nina transformed simple wafer paper into such a detailed and dimensional cake decoration!
